Logistics
Reaching Suzhou is easy, especially if you’re coming from Shanghai. The high-speed train from Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station to Suzhou takes just 25-30 minutes, offering frequent departures—ideal for a romantic and convenient journey. From Nanjing, trains run regularly as well, generally taking about 1-1.5 hours.
Suzhou doesn’t have its own major airport, so flying into Shanghai Pudong or Hongqiao, then transferring to the train, is the best bet. Once in Suzhou, local taxis, ride-hailing apps, and charming canal boats make travel around the city easy. In May, weather is typically mild, but check forecasts for occasional rain and bring an umbrella for your couple’s adventure.
Weather
Suzhou has a humid subtropical climate with four distinct seasons. Springs are mild and pleasant, summers are hot and humid, autumns are crisp and comfortable, and winters are chilly but not extreme. Rain is common, especially in June and July during the plum rain season.
From May 16 to May 18, Suzhou typically experiences warm temperatures, ranging from 18°C to 28°C (65°F–82°F). Occasional rain showers or thunderstorms are possible, but extreme weather is rare in mid-May. It’s a lovely time to enjoy outdoor gardens and cultural festivals as the city bursts with color and life.
Food & Drink
Suzhou’s cuisine is delicate and lightly sweet, with specialties like sweet and sour Mandarin fish, Suzhou-style mooncakes, and Nanmen wontons. Sip locally made Bi Luo Chun tea at charming teahouses on Pingjiang Road, or share desserts at Bookworm Cafe, a cozy spot for couples.
Enjoy romantic riverside dinners at Songhelou, famous for authentic Suzhou dishes, or Rongchunge for dim sum. For drinks, Moon Harbor features stylish wine bars with lake views. Most restaurants include service charges, so tipping isn’t customary.
Vegetarians will find tofu, seasonal greens, and rice noodles available, though it’s wise to clarify dietary needs. Experience the romance of Suzhou’s evening markets or stroll the Shantang Street food stalls for local delights.
