Travel Guide for
Athens

Greece

Hot-summer Mediterranean

Introduction

Athens sits in southeastern Greece, inland from the Saronic Gulf, with the Acropolis rising above a dense, lively city built around ancient ruins, cafés, and neighborhood squares. By early to mid-October, the weather is usually milder than summer—good for walking and outdoor dining, though you may still get warm afternoons and the occasional rain shower.

For a trip with friends on an average budget, Athens works well because you can balance major sights with low-cost food, casual bars, and plenty of areas best explored on foot. The city’s long history is everywhere, but it’s not a museum city: you can spend one day on classical landmarks and the next in relaxed districts like Plaka, Monastiraki, or Psyrri.

  1. 1
Settle in with a walk around Syntagma Square and Ermou
Start with an easy wander through the central streets to get your bearings, stretch after travel, and slip into the city's rhythm without overcommitting. The area is flat, lively, and practical for a first day, with plenty of places to pause for coffee or a casual bite.
  2. 2
Sunset drinks with an Acropolis view in Monastiraki
Make this your first proper Athens moment: a rooftop drink as the Acropolis begins to glow above the old city. It is ideal for a friends trip because the mood is social rather than formal, and you can keep the evening as short or as late as your energy allows.
  3. 3
Evening stroll through the lanes of Plaka
After dark, the small streets below the hill feel especially inviting, with neoclassical facades, tavern tables, and soft light bouncing off the stone. It is a simple, low-effort way to end the day while staying close to the center.

Logistics

Athens is best reached by flight, especially on an average budget with friends: Athens International Airport has frequent connections across Europe and good long-haul service. If you’re already in Greece, intercity buses are often the cheapest way to arrive from many mainland cities, while ferries are the practical choice from the islands, though they can be slower and weather-dependent.

From the airport, the most useful options are the metro, suburban rail, express buses, taxis, and ride-hailing for late arrivals or groups sharing a ride. Inside Athens, the metro is usually the fastest way to get around key areas, with buses and trams filling in gaps. In early October, weather is typically comfortable, but ferries can still be disrupted by rough seas, so allow flexibility if you’re combining Athens with island travel.

Weather

Athens has a classic Mediterranean climate: hot, dry summers; mild, wetter winters; and the most comfortable sightseeing weather in spring and autumn. Coastal areas usually feel a little cooler and breezier than central Athens, especially in summer. Winter rain is possible, but long cold spells are uncommon.

For October 4–17, expect early-autumn conditions: warm days, cooler evenings, and a growing chance of showers or a brief thunderstorm. Heatwaves are unlikely but not impossible early in the month; by mid-October, weather is usually pleasant for walking and ruins. Pack light layers, a compact rain layer, and comfortable shoes.

For a 13-day trip, plan flexible outdoor activities and check forecasts a few days ahead for any stormy days or ferry disruptions if you’re going to nearby islands. Book popular sites and restaurants ahead if you want fixed timing, but weather will rarely force major changes.

Food & Drink

Athens eats like a city of mezze, grills, pies, and market-fresh produce, with a strong sense of regional Greek home cooking. Look for souvlaki and gyros, spanakopita and tiropita, dolmades, giant beans baked in tomato, and octopus or sardines when seafood is good; for dessert, baklava or loukoumades are classic with Greek coffee. In October, autumn vegetables, mushrooms, and heartier stews start to appear, and the weather is ideal for lingering meals.

The most distinctive part of Athenian food culture is social, not formal: friends usually share plates, order a little at a time, and stretch dinner late into the evening. Tavernas are best for an average-budget group—casual, generous, and made for grazing—while mezedopoleia and ouzeries pair small dishes with ouzo, tsipouro, or local wine. For a food-focused night out, try Psyrri, Monastiraki, Koukaki, or the Central Market area for lively, honest eating.

For drinking, Greek coffee remains a daytime ritual, while frappé or freddo espresso is the modern local habit. Tipping is modest: rounding up or leaving about 5-10% for good service is appreciated, but not mandatory if a service charge is already included. If you eat vegetarian or vegan, Athens is very accommodating thanks to beans, greens, pies, and salads; just note seafood and grilled meats dominate many menus, so ask what is freshly made and seasonal.

Accommodation

For a friends trip on an average budget, the sweet spot is central but not ultra-touristy: Koukaki, Psyrri, and Makrygianni put you close to the Acropolis, bars, and metro, with plenty of apartment/house rentals and midrange hotels. Monastiraki is lively and convenient but can be noisier, so it suits groups who want nightlife over quiet.

If you want a hostel, stay around Psyrri or Monastiraki for social energy and easy transport. For better value and more space, apartments in Koukaki or Pangrati often work best for 13 days. On Hotels.com, look for places with strong reviews, air conditioning, and walkable metro access; book early for October 4–17, since autumn demand can push up prices and the best central units go first.
