Logistics

Getting to Cozumel is easy, with direct flights available from major cities in the US and Mexico to Cozumel International Airport. Alternatively, you can fly into Cancun International Airport, then take a bus or taxi to Playa del Carmen, and hop on a 40-minute ferry ride to Cozumel.

Ferries between Playa del Carmen and Cozumel run frequently throughout the day, and tickets are easy to purchase at the pier. Weather can occasionally affect ferry service, especially during hurricane season from June to November, so check schedules in advance. No trains go directly to Cozumel, so flying and ferries are your main options.

Weather

Cozumel enjoys a warm, tropical climate year-round, with daytime temperatures typically ranging from 75°F (24°C) in winter to 90°F (32°C) in summer. The island is humid and breezy, with sea temperatures perfect for swimming and snorkeling throughout the year.

The dry season, from November to April, is the most popular time to visit, offering plenty of sunshine and pleasant weather. The rainy season, from May to October, brings higher humidity, occasional heavy showers, and hurricane risk—especially from August to October—making it less ideal for travel.

Food & Drink

Cozumel’s local cuisine highlights fresh seafood, Mayan flavors, and classic Mexican dishes like ceviche, cochinita pibil, and tacos al pastor. Don’t miss homemade tortillas, aguas frescas, and regional specialties like sopa de lima. Popular local drinks include margaritas and local beers.

For a memorable meal, try El Moro or La Choza for traditional flavors, or Kinta and Buccanos at Night for fine dining. For drinks and a relaxed vibe, Wet Wendy’s and the Money Bar are favorites. Vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options are available at many places—just ask your server.

Tipping is customary; a 10–15% gratuity is appreciated if service isn’t already included. Most places are casual, and fresh seafood is best during winter and spring. Reservations may be wise for dinner at popular spots, especially during high season.

Operated by Senor Travel Bug, the itinerary of this tour is a classic of the Cancun and Riviera Maya region, but with two principal differences. You will ride in a Classic VW Beetle painted as a racing car (although you can choose a more 'standard' car if you prefer), and your guide, a former professional photographer, will take photos and video throughout the day, all of which will be shared with you for free by the following day. You should not leave this region of Mexico without visiting Chichen Itza, the only Modern Wonder of the World in North America. After a guided tour of the ruins, a refreshing dip in a cenote always proves very welcome and something you can only experience in this region. The final stop is in Valladolid where you stroll the streets and the main square, perhaps refreshing with a cool drink beside the cathedral to end the tour ahead of the return to Cancun. For larger groups, please contact provider directly.
